DQP vs CQP vs HND in Cameroon: DQP and CQP are vocational qualifications associated with Cameroon’s professional-training system, supervised by the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (MINEFOP). The HND is a two-year, BAC+2 higher-education diploma supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP). They are not three consecutive years of one automatic qualification ladder.
| Credential | System and authority | Typical entry and duration | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| DQP Diplôme de Qualification Professionnelle |
Vocational training; MINEFOP framework | Depends on the approved programme. A 2020 MINEFOP-based national mapping report described the public CFPR route as one year, open to holders of at least the BEPC. | Develop and certify competence for a trade or occupation. |
| CQP Certificat de Qualification Professionnelle |
Vocational training; MINEFOP framework | Depends on the approved programme. The same 2020 report described the public SAR/SM route as two years, open to CEP holders aged 14 or above. | Develop and certify occupational competence through vocational training. |
| HND Higher National Diploma |
Higher education; MINESUP and the national HND examination | Normally two academic years after the Baccalauréat, GCE Advanced Level or an accepted equivalent. | Complete a short-cycle higher-education programme in an approved speciality at BAC+2 level. |
Important: the DQP and CQP examples above describe specific public training-centre routes reported from MINEFOP data in 2020; they are not a universal admission rule for every speciality or private centre. Under Decree No. 2020/2592/CAB/PM, approved programmes and the ministerial instruments governing certification matter. Applicants should verify the current rules for the exact programme and examination session.
DQP means Diplôme de Qualification Professionnelle, or Diploma of Professional Qualification. It belongs to vocational training rather than the university higher-education cycle. Its purpose is to certify that a learner has acquired the knowledge, skills and occupational competence required by an approved training standard.
Cameroon’s 2018 law governing vocational training places professional training within a regulated system of public and approved private structures. A school should therefore be able to identify the exact programme, approval or authorization, supervising authority and certification arrangements—not merely advertise the letters “DQP”.
CQP means Certificat de Qualification Professionnelle, or Certificate of Professional Qualification. Like the DQP, it belongs to the vocational-training system and is intended to recognize occupational competence.
A common mistake is to say that CQP is automatically “higher” than DQP because one programme lasts longer, or that DQP is always above CQP because it is called a diploma. The official public-centre examples reported in 2020 actually used different entry levels and durations: CQP through SAR/SM was described as a two-year route from CEP, while DQP through CFPR was described as a one-year route from at least BEPC. That is why applicants must compare the approved occupation, entry requirement and certification—not rank the acronyms in isolation.
The Higher National Diploma is part of higher education. MINESUP regulates the HND system and launches a national examination session. It is normally a two-year programme after the Baccalauréat, GCE Advanced Level or an accepted equivalent, leading to a BAC+2 qualification in an approved speciality.
Official HND specialities include fields such as Software Engineering, Network and Security, Computer Graphics and Web Design, E-Commerce and Digital Marketing, and Electrical Power Systems. The exact speciality name must match the current MINESUP nomenclature and the institution’s authorization. See the MINESUP order governing the HND examination and the official 2026 HND examination notice.
No. A DQP or CQP does not automatically convert into the first year of an HND, and a one-year vocational programme should not be presented as “HND Year 1”. The two systems have different supervising ministries, admission rules, programme authorizations and examinations.
A learner who has completed vocational training may apply for an HND if they also satisfy the HND academic entry conditions and the institution’s current admission requirements. Practical skills gained through DQP or CQP can be valuable, but they do not replace the Baccalauréat, GCE Advanced Level or another formally accepted entry qualification unless a current official rule explicitly provides otherwise.
Consider a DQP or CQP when your priority is structured occupational training for a defined trade and you meet that programme’s entry conditions. Ask what practical assessments are required and which authority issues or recognizes the final credential.
Consider HND when you hold the required secondary-school qualification, want two years of higher education in an approved speciality and plan to sit the national HND examination. An HND may also support later study, but any degree top-up or credit transfer depends on the receiving institution’s rules; it is not automatic.
Not as a universal rule. They are vocational qualifications used in different approved training routes. Compare the occupation, entry level, curriculum, assessment and current ministerial rules.
HND is formally situated in short-cycle higher education at BAC+2. DQP and CQP belong to vocational training. Because the qualifications sit in different subsystems, the comparison should include their purpose and entry conditions, not only the word “higher”.
Possibly, but not because the vocational credential automatically grants HND entry. The applicant must meet the HND academic admission conditions and any programme-specific requirements.
No. A regulated qualification or national diploma should not be confused with a private certificate that only confirms attendance or completion of a short course.
About Afritech Institute: Afritech offers programmes in vocational training and higher education. Because these programmes belong to different regulatory systems, applicants should use the checks above for the exact course they plan to enter. Compare the available programmes and review current admissions information.
